The Story Behind the Beans: Decaf Lovers goes back to the pre-RoosRoast garage era, because all great origin stories need a garage. Specifically: Elise’s garage, where John first experimented with coffee roasting, homemade equipment, and the delicate art of not burning the place down. Elise, an Angell Elementary teacher and John’s girlfriend, connected him with people who loved coffee deeply but still had to function around children, lesson plans, and their own nervous systems. John roasted organic, water-processed decaf with care from day one, even if caffeine-chasing John didn’t have much personal use for it yet. The turning point came at a teacher dinner party: homemade apple pie, melting vanilla ice cream, and John’s freshly roasted decaf. Okay, yes, suddenly decaf made perfect sense. Later, in one of John’s 900 side quests, he painted Melissa’s house—the same teacher friend who brought the pie—and she made him the gingery lemony drink that became the GLT. Ann Arbor teachers gave us decaf respect and the GLT. Honestly, pay them more.
